Weekends 3 and 4

Plants Are In and the Horrible, Awful Shed is Gone!

After another trip to Ward's and a loot of over 70 plants and shrubs in the bed and cab of the truck, we were ready to get planting! Over two consecutive weekends, we transplanted several existing shrubs and hosta and managed to get all of the new plants into the ground. We also added layers of composted topsoil and mulch from our local community compost center, to help with drainage on the slopes.

All of our beds are 100% perennial, sun-loving, and bee-friendly. The plantings nearest the fire pit include boxwood, dogwood, lilac, lavendar and catmint to help keep mosquitos at bay. We included balloon flowers, sedum, catmint, blueberry, and hydrangeas in the areas nearest our lower patio. Beds in the front yard include several types of groundcover sedum that love our southern exposure, and spilled wine, juniper, and verbanum that integrate well with what we already had.

For work we did building up the backyard and installing all of the stone click here.

As great as our yard has been starting to look, there has been one thing standing in the way of true backyard beauty: the eyesore that was the previous owner's shed. Filled with 80 years of debris, it also served as the local mouse hotel.

Needless to say, the shed was in our way, and it finally met its match Memorial Day weekend.

Now, onto planning the new shed....which will serve as Brian's workshop and potting shed. Stay tuned!
